The Port of Marseille Fos is the economic engine of a dynamic region committed to climate action and improving air quality. As a pioneer in France and the Mediterranean in the use of the Shore Power System (CENAQ), the Port places environmental excellence at the heart of its development strategy. The electrical connection of ships during commercial calls exemplifies this ecological leadership.
The CENAQ–Zero-Smoke Calls technology involves supplying ships with electricity distributed from shore, allowing them to shut down their diesel engines during docking operations. Already in use at low-voltage (LV) berths for winter storage and ship repair, as well as at high-voltage (HV) berths for ferries serving Corsica and the Maghreb, this technology will continue to expand in 2026 to include cruise ships and eventually all of Marseille’s docks.
On June 28, 2023, Emmanuel Macron, President of the Republic, affirmed during a visit to the Port of Marseille Fos his commitment to making it an “exemplary” port in terms of decarbonization, backing this ambition with a budget of over 200 million euros, part of which is dedicated to accelerating the electrification of the docks by 2029.
